The Road to a PSA 10: How to Prepare Your Cards for Professional Grading

The Road to a PSA 10: How to Prepare Your Cards for Professional Grading

1. The Pre-Grading Inspection

Before you spend money on grading fees, you need to be your own harshest critic. Use a magnifying glass and a bright LED light to check for:

  • Centering: Is the border even on all sides?
  • Corners: Are they perfectly sharp or is there "whitening"?
  • Surface: Are there any scratches or "print lines"? Always handle the card using soft-touch card sleeves to avoid adding new fingerprints during this inspection.

2. Cleaning Without Damage

Sometimes, a card has a small speck of dust or a smudge that can be removed. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth and very light pressure. Never use liquids. For collectors who take this seriously, having a clean, dedicated non-slip playmat as a "workstation" is vital to ensure no debris from the table scratches the card back.

3. The Perfect Submission Sandwich

Grading companies have specific requirements for how cards should arrive. The standard "Submission Sandwich" involves:

  1. A "Penny Sleeve" (loose fit to avoid corner friction).

  2. A Semi-Rigid Card Holder (to prevent bending). Using high-clarity sleeves allows the grader to see the card clearly without removing it initially, reducing the risk of accidental damage at the facility.

4. Safe Transit: The Final Fortress

Once your cards are sleeved and held in semi-rigids, place them between two pieces of thick cardboard and secure them with a rubber band (not too tight!). Finally, place this bundle inside a sturdy, padded storage box before putting it in a shipping mailer.
